Victoria’s Solar Emergency Backstop Mechanism is now in effect, we explain the new regulations and how you can get the most out of your solar.

Did you know? As of October 1 new regulations under Victoria’s solar emergency backstop mechanism came into effect, aimed at protecting Victorian households and ensuring a reliable energy supply

What is the new solar emergency backstop mechanism?

Any new or upgraded solar system must be internet-enabled, connected to, and able to communicate with, AusNet servers. This change is a requirement of the Victorian government’s new mandate — a mechanism called the solar emergency backstop.

Why is it changing?

Victoria’s growing solar adoption has led to situations where the grid struggles to handle the excess energy exported by households on sunny days. The outdated grid infrastructure, designed for one-way power flow, can become unstable, potentially causing power outages. The solar emergency backstop is a solution to manage the grid more effectively, preventing blackouts and ensuring a reliable energy supply for everyone.

When does the solar emergency backstop get activated?

The Australian Electricity Market Operator (AEMO) will tell AusNet when to activate the emergency backstop, and for how long. They decide this based on when there is too much energy predicted on the grid.

What do you need to do?

If you are looking at installing solar or upgrading, you will need to have the correct equipment (inverter) connected to your solar panels. You also need to have a reliable internet connection. We recommend hardwiring an ethernet connection as this is more stable than Wi-Fi. You will be responsible for ensuring that your system always remains connected to the internet.

How to get the most out of your solar system

Solar Victoria recommends using your most high energy usage appliances during the day when you’re generating solar. Set appliances like dishwashers or washing machines to run during the day instead of in the evenings. We can also show you how to monitor your solar generation, consumption and exports.

By investing in solar power, you can reduce your reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to a cleaner, healthier planet.
